Common Signs In Johannesburg & Kwazulu-Natal
Where the name Ingozi comes from:
Ingozi is the Zulu/Xhosa word for ‘danger’ and it is regularly seen on signs in South Africa “Danger, Gevaar, Ingozi” – the other language being Afrikaans of course. Ingozi is also the word for danger in “Fanagalo” the patois & lingua-franca of African miners (who may be afrikaans, xhosa, english, zulu etc) The word was chosen as it has a good sound, has an ‘i’ at the front and back and a zed in it! The word is also very close the word ‘Nkosi’ which means Lord or God in Xhosa and is part of the South African national anthem – a Xhosa song – “Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika”.
